Endoscopic Thyroid Sugery

Causes :

Thyroid is the endocrine gland placed in the neck that produces energy providing thyroid hormones. The energy is transferred to the cells of the body to successfully regulate metabolism of the body. The thyroid gland is powered by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and any disorder in these tissues can negatively impact the function of the thyroid and result in thyroid problems. The types of thyroid disorders are :

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Goitre
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Thyroiditis

Treatment for Hyperthyroidism is a surgery known as Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery. While hypothyroidism can be treated with medications other disorders like goiter and cancer need this surgery.

Types : when detected with hyperthyroidism the doctor would recommend a surgery also known as thyroidectomy or Endoscopic Thyroid Surgery. Although there is conventional thyroidectomy also doctors and patients prefer Endoscopic surgery because of minimal incisions.

Symptoms : symptoms of thyroid disorder can be :

  • Swelling in the neck
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Losing or gaining weight
  • Mood swings
  • Loss of hair
  • Depression
  • Constipation

What you can expect :

Pre & During : The Thyroid Endoscopic Surgery or thyroidectomy would be performed under general anaesthesia. There would be monitors to keep a check on your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen level. After that the surgeon would make a few incisions in your neck to put small surgical instruments along with a viewing instrument inside. The surgeon would view the video on a screen in the surgery room to effectively remove the thyroid tissue. The incisions would afterwards secured with tiny stitches or a surgical tape would be used to close them.

After : After the surgery the patient is moved to the hospital room after gaining consciousness. Discharge from the hospital happens after 24 hours. The post surgery recovery is fast and the patient can take up normal activities quickly.

Results : The patient feels active real quick and the no scar surgery is the best with the minimum of post operative pain. If only a portion of thyroid is removed then you won’t need thyroid hormone therapy but in case the entire thyroid is removed the doctor will determine the amount of your thyroid replacement requirements by conducting some blood tests.
