Causes :

Thoracoscopic surgery or VAT(Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) is a kind of key hole procedure which assists the surgeons to have a clear look inside the chest cavity for diagnosis and treatment of diseases concerning organs like pleural cavity, lungs, diaphragm, sympathetic chain and the thymus gland. When it is used therapeutically it helps in removing the portion of a diseased lunge tissue. Vats is done using an instrument called thoracoscope.


Types : By making use of Thoracoscopic surgery the following operations can be performed :

  • Pleural biopsy : this is done if the doctor finds chances of cancer or any kind of infection, a sample of the pleura is removed for study.
  • Lung biopsy : in cases where a pathologist finds a small piece of diseased lung tissue, the biopsy is done to remove it.
  • Sympathectomy : is done to destroy the nerves in the sympathetic nervous system.
  • Blebecetomy : conducted in order to remove bulla that is dilated air space in the lung parenchyma.
